Saving Images and Screenshots

Overtone Analyzer can take screenshots from any part of the user interface and save them as image files. You can also save each image in different sizes and formats, for example to prepare a small version for the web, and a large high-resolution version for printing.

Click on File / Save Image to open the Export Image Dialog:

Export Image Dialog
Figure 1: Export Image Dialog

This dialog has two main sections. On the left side in the Export Area section you specify what you want to save, and on the right side in the Output Images section you specify where you want to save it, at which sizes and file types, and under which names.

Export Area

In this section you control if the entire Overtone Analyzer window is saved, or if only parts of the interface should be saved. If you choose to save only selected views, check those views that should be included. Overtone Analyzer will export the smallest rectangle that includes all selected views, so in same cases that views may be implicitly included. You will see a yellow frame marking the selected area in the Overtone Analyzer window.

Set size

This button allows to set the size of the exported area. For example, if you want to take a screenshot of only the analyzer view and you want it to be exactly 400x300 Pixels, first select the analyzer view in the 'selected views' list, and then click on the 'Set size' button and enter your desired dimensions. Overtone Analyzer will adjust the main windows such that the analyzer view now has the desired size.
The 'Original Size' field shows the current size of the exported area.

Output Images

This section determines the location, name, size, and format of the exported image files. You can save a single screenshot in more than one size. This can be useful when you need a single image in multiple sizes, for example when preparing a web site.

Output Folder

Select a folder where the screenshots will be saved.

Base Name

Enter the name of the current screenshot. This should be only a descriptive name, not including any file type endings.

Output Files

On this list you can enter one or more files to be saved. The filename should include the base name and a file type ending. Supported file types are .bmp, .jpg, and .png. Bmp is an uncompressed format and produces fairly large files. Jpg and png are compressed formats. Jpg is a lossy format, which means that image files compressed in this format loose some quality and detail. Png is a lossless format. Files compressed in this format retain the original quality and no detail is lost, but the compressed files can be slightly larger than jpg files.

Aspect ratio scaling

For each output image, you can specify a width and height if you want the image to be resized before saving. The Aspect ratio scaling field determines if width and height are automatically adjusted to maintain the aspect ratio. The available options are:

  • Original size of export area: The exported image will have the exact size that the selected export area has. The width and height fields are ignored.
  • No scaling (width and height as entered): The exported image will have the exact dimensions specified by the width and height fields, even if the resulting aspect ratio is different from the original export area.
  • Scale width: The output image will have the exact height specified by the height field. The width will be automatically calculated to fit the aspect ratio of the original image.
  • Scale height: The output image will have the exact width specified by the width field. The height of the exported image will be adjusted to fit the aspect ratio of the original export area.

Export Now

This will save the selected output images immediately.

Export with Hotkey

This button will store the current image export settings and close the dialog. Now whenever you press the export image hotkey, a new screenshot will be saved into the output folder. By default, the hotkey is F12, but you can change that in the keyboard options dialog. You can check the 'include mouse cursor' option to include the mouse cursor in screenshots that are saved with the hotkey.
